Obituary of James Harris
James V. Harris, 70, of Beardstown, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.
He was born August 21, 1943 in Chicago, the son of William J. Bryan and Helen C. Mitchell Harris. He married Leslie Fritz on February 14, 1997 in Beardstown and she survives.
He is also survived by his children, Ellie Winslow and James "Jim" (Michelle) Harris, all of Beardstown, Christy Harris of Amarillo, TX and Tamara Merriman of Jacksonville; one stepson, Adam Hults of Bath; nine grandchildren, Jocee, Jaycee, J.T., Breeanna, Taylor, Brandon, C.J., Kelsie and Kim; four great-grandchildren, Blake, Landon, Bryson and Harper; one sister, Sandy (Tom) Groff of Bartonville; one brother, Zelvin Mitchell; and one special Pekingese, Joey Harris. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charles and Herbert Harris.
James was employed as a truck driver for 35 years before working in the Secretary of State's office as a transportation specialist, retiring in 2009. He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church and Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post 1239. He had a love for the outdoors, whether it was gardening, boating or fishing, he enjoyed time spent outside. James was an accomplished guitar player and an avid fan of Nascar and the St. Louis Cardinals.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2014 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery. Family will meet friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Memorials are suggested to Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post 1239.
