Joan Kaler Frey, 84, of Beardstown, IL, passed away August 24th, 2017 at Heritage Health in Beardstown.
Joan Elizabeth Kaler was born February 19th, 1933 in Rantoul, IL, the daughter of John S. Kaler and Edna Head Kaler. Joan was a 1951 graduate of Rantoul Township High School. After graduation, she went to work at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, where she met her Husband, Robert (Bob) W. Frey. Joan and Bob were married in Rantoul at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church on May 28th, 1955. Bob preceded her in death on March 5th, 2004.
Joan was a proud Air Force wife and mother of five children. After Bob retired from the Air Force in 1965, the Frey Family moved to Bob’s hometown, Beardstown, IL. Once all her children were in school, Joan began working at McClure, McClure, and Brannan Law Office as a bookkeeper and legal secretary. Joan retired from the law office in 1997.
Joan was a member of St. Alexius Catholic Church. She was a devoted Christian, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Friend. Joan enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, and collecting Hummel figurines. She especially loved reading and spending time with her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Joan was also preceded in death by her Parents, a Brother, Jack, and Sister-in-Law, Lois Kaler.
She is survived by one son: Bill (Tammie) Frey of Lincoln, Ca., Four Daughters: Barbara Frey of Springfield, IL; Lori (David) Novak of Springfield, IL; Melanie (Bruce) McElfresh of Brookfield, Mo; Megan (Marty) Turner of Beardstown, IL., Twelve Grandchildren: Cory (Caleb) Howard, Whitney (Jared) Stadtman, Kaley (Ben) Vasquez, Mackenzie (Ryan) Milat, Dustin (Mattie) Looker, Tyler (Carolina) Looker, Kaleb Schroll, Tara McElfresh, Tess (Blake Miller) McElfresh, Adam (Misty) Paul, Allix (Erik Reich) Turner, and Brian (Tiffany) Turner; Fifteen Great-Grandchildren: Brayden, Graeson, Peyton, Annabelle, Warrior, Legend, Pierson, Liam, Austin, Jackson, Kaler, Rocky, Rose, Hailey, & Mason, Two Nephews: Chris Kaler & Patrick Kaler, Two Nieces: Jacqueline Cannon & Kathy Kaler.
In accordance with Joan’s wishes, she donated her body for scientific study. A memorial mass will be held 6 PM Thursday, August 31, 2017 at St. Alexius Catholic Church in Beardstown. Private burial will be held at a later date. Family will meet with friends prior to services at Schultz Hall - St. Alexius from 4:30 to 6 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice or The Beardstown Harbor Project. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.sagerfuneralhome.com.
